Life isn't about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself'

George Bernard Shaw
If you cannot mould yourself entirely as you would wish, how can you expect other people to be entirely to your liking?

After the poll

It is wonderful to be able to do some normal things once again!

Living through a political campaign, if you are trying to do the job properly, is like operating in a strange parallel universe.  Doorsteps, letterboxes, envelopes, maps, lists, all take on a significance that they normally never have.   Other, far more important things cease to matter for a few weeks.

The process is like a strange quest in which you never quite meet the dragon, but glimpse him in passing, flashing down country lanes, or on the front of leaflets that people insist on showing you. When I finally met my chief opponent, at a very early hour in Bildeston on polling day, it was odd to meet a stranger who I felt I had already got to know quite well.  Robert, and his numerous supporters, proved on closer inspection to be reasonable people, and I have little to complain about with regard to the way in which they campaigned.

Both sides worked very hard to get our respective messages across.  Our effectiveness in this can be measured by the relatively high turnout at the election of 42%.  This is a good deal higher than that seen across the county which I think was closer to 35%.   Voter apathy is a sad thing, and taken to extremes can be a dangerous one.

So what now?  After a bit of a rest this weekend I shall be setting off for Ipswich on Tuesday morning for a meeting with those Conservative councillors who have been elected.  I hope to sign my Acceptance of Office, and then I shall be sorting out matters such as IT support, passes and training schedules.  I shall also be contacting parish councils across the Division, unless they get to me first.

I shall also be responding to the two residents of Cosford who have already contacted me about pressing issues, both of which are really District, rather than County Council matters!

May Day....time to vote and then to get out into the garden!

At last the sun has some warmth in it, which is great for polling day tomorrow.

I hope that lots of readers of the blog will come out and vote and that the majority of you will do the 'Right Thing' and vote Conservative.

Once the voting is done it could well be time to turn your attention to the garden.  To help all gardeners I would like to pass on the following offer from Suffolk County Council:-

'Next week is national Compost Awareness Week and as a thank you to residents for recycling their organic waste, we are giving away compost at 8 sites around Suffolk. We will be promoting our fantastic new offers for home compost bins and food digesters, many of which are drastically subsidised to help reduce the 40,000 tonnes of organic waste that is sent to landfill in Suffolk every year.

To find out more about the dates, times and venues and the great new offers click here. Compost available on the day while stocks last!'

Gainsborough's House May Market

Gainsborough’s House is holding its annual May Market next Saturday, 4 May.

As usual there will be the chance to buy original works of art, crafts, books and many other items.  Entrance to the museum will be free and there is an opportunity to see the interesting current temporary exhibition.  Creative Forces, Jonathan Clarke and Colin Slee, displays the work of two artists working locally, one a sculptor, the other a painter.  Both have an interesting perspective on the local environment and some of the more striking exhibits spill out into the garden.

Saturday's market will see the launch of a book about the statue of Thomas Gainsborough on Market Hill. This is the first of several events marking the centenary of the unveiling of the statue of Thomas Gainsborough on Market Hill on June 10 1913.  The book, which has been edited and part written by Valerie Herbert, contains contributions from other people including a chapter on the history of Gainsborough’s House from me.

June 10 this year will see a Grand Re-enactment take place on the Market Hill at which people are being encouraged to come along in period costume.  For information about this and other related events go to:
