Sale of Books, this Saturday, Acton Church!
On Saturday in Acton Church from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. there is to be a sale of books in aid of the church. I understand that the titles on offer will be varied and of high quality and that knowledgable and personable sales people will be on hand to help one make a choice!
On the subject of books, I quite upset my mother in law at the weekend by suggesting that she should consider buying an electronic book reader rather than taking a whole pile of books away on holiday. Of course we all love books and there is something faintly sad in buying a souless machine that might ultimately take the place of all those old friends on the bookshelf.
Nonetheless those who have tried the Amazon 'Kindle' and other devices that enable one to download a hundred or so books from the internet, say that they are much pleasanter to use than they expected. An added bonus is apparently that one can read in bed without disturbing ones partner because the screen has its own backlighting, one can change the font to large print, and of course suitcases would be a lot lighter without the weight of holiday reading.
I dont think that the Kindle, which is supposed to be the best device available at present, is yet available in the UK, and at around $350 dollars they are not cheap. In fact judging by my mother in law's response their time has not yet come. So, in the meantime, get down to Acton Church and buy lots of what might become the antiques of the future!
