The dawning of the Age of Aquarius!
We went down to World of Water in Coggleshall yesterday to buy plants to start stocking our new pond.
We decided to include a wildlife pond in the new bit of garden that we acquired a year or so ago. I love to see dragonflies and other water related creatures! We are not going to include fish, since apparently this is incompatible with creating the right sort of environment for other species, but it is probable that fish will arrive of their own accord in due course.
Nick has been doing a good deal of reading up about how to get the balance of plants right in order to keep the water sweet and attractive to wildlife. We have already been visited by a pair of ducks, much to the concern of some experts, since their potential to ‘enrich’ the water makes the mix rather too nutritious!
The photograph above is very much ‘before’ the project gets under way. I will post up other pictures as the pond progresses which will, with luck, look a bit more attractive.
Inevitably, in addition to all the paraphernalia related to looking after the pond (sleeve length gloves and what looks like an extended loo brush for getting rid of algae), my eye was caught by a really nice water feature which will look just the thing on the back terrace! So we now have two water splashes in a garden which has been free of such things since our arrival almost twenty five years ago, and probably well before that too.
