We don't know exactly when Thomas Gainsborough was born, but we do know that he was baptised on 14th May 1727. At that time people were baptised soon after they were born and therefore we can assume that his birthday is at the beginning of May.
Every year, to celebrate the birth of the artist, Gainsborough's House arranges for his statue to be 'garlanded'. This year the ceremony, marking the artist's 288th birthday, will take place tomorrow on the Market Hill in Sudbury at 10 a.m. The event will be accompanied by live music from The Minstrels.
Entrance to the museum will be free all day. There will be activities for children and guided tours of the house on the hour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There is an interesting temporary exhibition of photographs of artists in their studios running at present, together with one or two Gainsboroughs on loan plus the marvellous permanent collection.
Do go along and take a look at the House and Garden.
