All Saints Church in Sudbury, pictured above, has an open day tomorrow,
Saturday 1st July.
If you decide to go along you will have the chance to look
at 3 ledger stones that have been unearthed during recent renovations. One is of a former Mayor of Sudbury, John Lord,
who died in 1643 at the age of 66.
‘Ledger stone’ is the name given to memorial slabs on the
floor of churches. It is not clear what
qualified people to get a mention inside the church rather than outside in
the churchyard, but the verse below (courtesy of Wickipedia) which used to
surround a ledger stone for a doctor in Devon, gives a bit of a hint!
Here l lie outside the chancel door;
Here I lie because I'm poor:
The further in, the more they pay;
But here I lie as warm as they.
The Church is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the Tower
being available to climb at a cost of £1.
Refreshments will be on sale and the Salvation Army Band will play in the
Old Vicarage Garden from 2 p.m. to 2.30 p.m.
