My breakfast was ruined this morning when I heard on the radio that the Government was made aware of the fungus attacking our ash trees some FOUR YEARS AGO! This is not surprising really since Denmark, where 90 percent of ash trees have died, is not that distant or exotic a place, and the disease took hold there some time back.
The Government claim that they failed to act because they muddled the disease up with another, less virulent, type, and in any event were worried about FALLING FOUL OF EU REGULATIONS WITH REGARD TO IMPORT RESTRICTIONS.
Why is it that the European Union lies (in this case literally) at the root of so many sources of cost and frustration?
Meanwhile I gather that the powers that be in Brussels are currently issuing diktats about what sort of shoes and jewellery hairdressers should be allowed to wear.
You couldn't make it up.
