The Print Workshop at 30 marks the foundation of the nationally recognised print workshop facility at Gainsborough’s House more than thirty years ago. Works on show celebrate the work of many of the outstanding artists who have used the workshop over the years.
The printmaker Miranda Mott, who has worked at the print
studio from the start, and who was instrumental in its inception, writes in the
catalogue produced to support the show:-
‘it was unusual…that the Board of Governors of a Museum dedicated to the life and work of the artist, Thomas Gainsborough (1727 -1788) had the vision to welcome the proposal that contemporary artist-printmakers might use the redundant Coach House at the bottom of the garden of Gainsborough’s Birthplace as a print studio. The plan would bring historical and contemporary art together under the same umbrella, where they belong - all past artists were once contemporary, and all contemporary artiest will be history one day.’
There are some very attractive works featured in the
exhibition, and also displays of some archival material and illustrations of
aspects of printmakers’ different techniques.
A number of the works are for sale, and a good number have
already been sold! Further prints are
available for sale in the shop, as are some lovely Christmas and other cards,
stocking fillers, books and gift items.
Coffee, tea and cakes and biscuits are available in the coffee shop.
The Print Workshop at 30 runs until 15th December. Gainsborough’s House is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last entry 4.30 p.m.)
