On their website the builders of the Halt in Lavenham, Knight Developments make a great deal of fuss about how the village is a wonderful place to live. They comment on its 'enviable location deep in the Suffolk countryside' and emphasise the attractions of the local community.
While what they say is true, their comments are of course principally aimed at selling their development of new houses, which range in price from £250,000 to £450,000. I have commented on the shortcomings of the development earlier on this site, so do not intend to reiterate them here.
It seems however that Knight are not particularly interested when it comes to protecting the environment and community in which they are building their bijou estate. For several months now the Parish Council and Suffolk County Council's rights of way team have been trying to get the company to reinstate the footpath that skirts the site. This was damaged at an early stage of the construction process. So far all requests to fulfil their legal obligation have been ignored and the path remains in a virtually impassable state.
The path is much used by residents, who are unimpressed by Knight's lack of concern. It seems that far from being a considerate contractor, the company cares little for the village, out of which it is likely to make a tidy profit.
I just hope that purchasers of the houses will not experience the same level of indifference and carelessness.
