Interesting times at the County Council, where the
Conservative administration no longer has an overall majority following the
loss on Thursday of the Haverhill Cangle seat to UKIP.
The Conservatives now have 36 out of a total of 75 seats, the
opposition parties 38, and there is one vacancy. If we retain the vacant seat, and our ex
colleague, the notorious member for Hadleigh, Brian Riley, turns up and votes
with us, and, if, crucially, the Chairman (who has a casting vote) continues to
be a Conservative after the AGM of the Council later in the Month, we can just
get a measure through without help.
However, cross party discussion (often a good idea in my view)
is now the most likely way ahead. I hope
that the luminaries involved will have the ability, and also the necessary
humility, to achieve consensus for the benefit of all residents in the County. Party politics should not get in the way of
doing the right thing.
