The report on the evening by Andy Sheppard, which can be found under the 'Plague' tab above, is not for the faint hearted but is very interesting. Complete with an edifying picture from a Black Death Bible, the narrative offers an instructive contrast to my current weekend reading material, 'Reaching down the Rabbit Hole, Extraordinary Journeys into the Human Brain' by Dr Allan H Ropper and B.D.Burrell. This was a recent BBC Book of rhe Week and well worth reading if you are interested in this fast evolving aspect of medical science.
The last instance of the plague in Suffolk fell between 1906 and 1918. Dr Ropper's book, which describes incidents from his career as a Boston neurologist, was published in 2014. Medicine has travelled a very long way in 100 years!
The next LWHS event will be on 18th May at 7.30 in The Parish Room, when Marcia Whiting will give a talk on ‘The life of Sir Alfred James Munnings’, one of England’s finest painter of horses, First World War artist and an outspoken critic of Modernism. The talk will also include his associations with Sudbury and Gainsborough's House Museum.
