On a recent programme about satisfaction with public
services on Radio Suffolk, a number of people interviewed said that they felt
that the Library Service has improved since it threw off the shackles of local
government control. This could well be
down to the additional community spirit that has been stimulated by residents
giving extra support, and the presence of volunteers who obviously have a high
level of enthusiasm for the ethos and purpose of the institution.
A good example of this is the newly formed Friends
organisation at Lavenham Library which I wrote about on the website some months ago. This
group has already developed a number of initiatives that not only aim to raise
funds for extras at the library, but also will make it a more interesting and
vibrant place.
The first of these is a scheme to create a real internet café
at the Library, with tea and coffee on offer alongside free WIFI services. The small contribution made towards the hot
drinks will go towards library funds.
Some basic language taster sessions are planned if there is
enough interest. I understand that an Italian
speaker has already offered her services and that French and Spanish are also
possible. (I wonder if there would be any interest in Russian? Not really a holiday destination I know, and
the language is a little tricky, but I could help people to find their way on
the Moscow Metro!).
Debbie, the librarian, has started a Knit and Natter session
on Fridays (more details available from the Library), and there are plans to
have a stall at the Christmas Fair in Lavenham on Friday December 6
and Saturday 7 December (donations of produce such as chutneys
etc. welcome)
The Friends are also helping out by providing refreshments
at the Lavenham Literary Festival in November, and hosting a meeting of Suffolk
Library Managers in October.
If you want to support the work of the Library and are
interested in getting involved with the Friends group please contact Debbie at
the Library or Marilyn on 01787 247805.
If you cannot help directly, do try to support the organisation by
generous participation in the various events and offerings!
