This
spring, the Suffolk Waste Partnership are keen to hear from residents who would
like to master of the art of composting by joining the enthusiastic
volunteers that make up the Suffolk Master Composters.
A free
two-day Suffolk Master Composter foundation course will be held at Lackford
Lakes Nature Reserve in Bury St Edmunds where volunteers will receive expert
training from the Suffolk Waste Partnership and Garden Organic. This will
enable them to act as composting ambassadors to encourage others to compost
through promotional talks, events and demonstrations. The course will be
take place on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 April from 10am to 4pm. No
experience is required as all that is needed is an interest in putting
Suffolk’s resources to good use.
Composting
materials and ongoing support will be provided throughout the volunteers’
involvement. In return volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 30
hours to the scheme to help promote the composting message through a wide range
of methods, such presentations to youth groups and writing newsletters for
community groups.
Suffolk residents who would like to attend the
two day training courses can register their interest by contacting Craig
Renton, Waste Advisor on 01473 264795.

Master
Composter, Rupert Tabley from Stowmarket is one of 60 volunteers who have
completed their training since the scheme began in November 2007. Rupert said,
"The
course was not only instructive but was carried out by dedicated enthusiasts
who made the content 'fun to learn'. It is very rewarding to talk to the public
about waste reduction, recycling and home composting in particular. So many
people are very receptive and glad of the advice – in particular children who
are usually very enthusiastic about green issues. It has also been a joy to
meet and volunteer with a great group of like-minded people".
